Herring in different forms is one of the most popular polish dishes. It is common to consume herring in oil, salted herring fillets à la matias and herring carcasses. Restaurants compete in finding new recipes for herring, that way we can eat herring in jelly, herring in sour cream, with various sauces and dressings, with dried tomatoes, fried plums or with capers and red onion. Herring is also a popular ingredient of salads (herring salads).

What’s interesting, herrings are packed with valuable nutrients, often more than expensive and more “prestigious” fish. Herring is healthy, although not every fish contains the same amount of fat, in case of herring it varies between 0,5% and  even 30%. Eating 50g of a high in fat herring equals eating a 500g piece of cod. – that’s the opinion of dr Grzegorz Tokarczyk from the West Pomeranian  University of Technology in Szczecin, faculty of food sciences and fisheries (for “Gazeta Wyborcza”). In conclusion, it is a good idea to look for a good quality herring, not only by the sea.
